Teeth are lost for many reasons. Dental implants are a replacement for the root of the lost tooth.
The diagram to the left shows a natural tooth on the left side. The right side shows the dental implant used to replace the tooth.
The dental implant to the left has 3 parts. A root which is placed surgically into the bone, a crown replacing the tooth that we see in the mouth and a third piece attached to the dental implant called an abutment. There are several abutment types used by general dentists to help fit the crown.
Dental implants can replace teeth lost from various reasons. The diagram to the right shows the space where a tooth had to be pulled.
There are a few ways to replace this tooth. A removable partial denture could replace it using clasps to grab other teeth. A cemented bridge could be made drilling down and crowning the adjacent teeth. The option shown here is to replace the root with a dental implant.
The second diagram shows the dental implant placed into the missing space. Yes, this can be done comfortably!
A dental crown needs to be placed by the general dentist over the implant. The diagram to the right shows the crown ready to cement onto the dental implant
The final diagram shows the crown in place. The tooth has been replaced with a dental implant.
