The Questions Asked Frequently
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are replacement roots made of lightweight titanium. They are placed into the jawbone and fuse with surrounding bone. Replacement teeth are then made to fit on the new titanium root. The result is a comfortable and virtually permanent tooth replacement system that looks, feels and functions like natural teeth.

What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
There are several. Since the dental implant is fused in the jawbone, there is little slipping as found in partial dentures. Since the root is replaced, the adjacent need not be ground down for a cemented bridge. The biting and chewing functions are restored. Smiling and speaking can be done with confidence.

Are their Benefits for the Surrounding Teeth and the Jawbone?
When teeth are removed, the jawbone where the root was begins to resorb or shrink. This can change the shape of your face. A dental implant placed into the jawbone can keep it healthy and full sized. Bridges require the adjacent teeth to be ground down for supporting crowns for the bridge. Dental implants allow the adjacent teeth to remain as they were.

Will the Dental Implant Look Natural?
The modern goal of dental implants it to replace the tooth not only with a natural appearance, but also with a natural function and comfort.

What is the Success Rate of Dental Implants?
Dental implants can last a long, long time. The Branemark company first placed dental implants of this type 30 years ago and the first patient still uses them. Statistics show a rate of 95% success over the last decade.

Who is a Candidate for Dental Implants?
The periodontist will interview the patient, review the health history and the habits, study differing radiographs, examine the area involved and discuss the possibilities. But basically, if the jawbone has good size and the health condition is good, it is likely that dental implants can be considered.

Who Will Perform the Procedure?
A team of both your general dentist and the periodontist will work together. The periodontist places the root part of the dental implants surgically and the general dentist will fabricate the tooth portion.

How Long Will It Take?
Normally, the dental implants can be placed in a short surgical visit under local anesthetic. Then an extended period of healing is necessary to allow the dental implant to bond to the jawbone. This is normally 4-6 months and the patient wears temporary teeth during this time.

Is It Painful?
All surgical procedures involve some discomfort in inconvenience. Local anesthetics can provide excellent numbness while having dental implants placed. If you have more anxiety, sedation can be provided. With proper planning and modern medications, the discomfort can be held to a minimum.

What about the Cost?
While dental implants often cost more than traditional restorative dentistry, most patients consider them to be an investment in their future. Not only do they feel better about their physical appearance, they are able to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Furthermore, once a tooth ahs been replaced, it seldom requires further attention. The same is not always true for conventional restorations.

How Do I Care for My Dental Implants?
Just like your natural teeth, dental implants need care and attention. Regular checkups at the dentist, regular cleanings and brushing and flossing are all part of the regimen required to maintain health. The office staff will coach you in building the appropriate habits to care for dental implants.
