Gum disease affects both the gum(gingiva) and the supporting jaw bone. It starts out sometimes as gingivitis with red, swollen gums that bleed on brushing. However, in some people, especially smokers, these symptoms are not present. The disease process moves into the bone around the teeth. This bone, the jaw bone, begins to melt away. Gum disease often can cause the loss of teeth without any symptoms until the teeth are loose.
Healthy Mouth. Notice the pink color of the gum and its surface is similar to an orange peel. With proper hygiene and dental care, the gums should last a lifetime.
Gingivitis affects the gums alone. The gum gets red and swells. It can be painful, create mouth odor and be unsightly. Generally, with proper therapy, it is reversible.
Periodontitis affects the gums and the bone. The bone is slowly melted away and the gum will shrink. This is often not painful and can advance without people noticing.
